- Uses: desalination and cleaning poultices on stone and mortars (often mixed with Arbocel cellulose or sepiolite), thickener for aqueous solutions, additive in mortars and paints for thixotropy
- Insoluble in water (swells); take care on sensitive surfaces as particles may be retained – use an interleaving sheet of Japanese paper
