The Aquazol is the trade name of a family thermoplastic polymers based on poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline). These materials are characterised by very good ageing resistance and high degree of reversibility, key elements for art conservation treatments.
Aquazol can be used both as adhesive as well as consolidant for paint layers, offering controlled bonding and stabilisation without the weaknesses of traditional or conventional synthetic materials.
One of its most important characteristics is its full solubility in water, as well as its solubility in a wide range of polar organic solvents. Thanks to this behaviour, Aquazol can replace:
-
water-soluble animal glues (e.g. animal gelatine – "kolleta"),
-
acrylic emulsions,
-
polyvinyl acetate (PVA) emulsions.
Typical applications
-
Bonding and reattachment of paint layers
-
Consolidation of deteriorated paint surfaces
-
Bonding of paper and sensitive materials
-
Alternative adhesive to animal and acrylic glues
Advantages
-
High reversibility
-
Very good ageing resistance
-
Fully soluble in water
-
Solubility in many polar organic solvents
-
Thermoplastic behaviour with controlled activation
-
Wide compatibility with conservation materials
