Tannic acid (gallotannin, CAS 1401-55-4) from Kremer Pigmente, as a light brown powder. It is a natural polyphenol that forms stable dark complexes with iron ions (iron tannate).
- Solubility: very good in water and ethanol; minimal in non-polar solvents
- Uses in conservation: corrosion inhibitor/rust converter on iron (usually 5–20% in water or ethanol, with or without phosphoric acid), temporary stabilisation of archaeological iron; a component of iron-gall inks and plant dyes
- When applied to iron, subsequent protection with wax or acrylic resin is recommended
