The Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) is a synthetic resin obtained by the saponification of polyvinyl acetate. It is widely used for preparing aqueous adhesive solutions, as protective varnish for metals and as consolidant for paint layers, especially in conditions of increased humidity.
It dissolves fully in water and partially in ethanol and methanol, while it is insoluble in organic solvents. The films it forms are stable, transparent and optically neutral, a characteristic that makes it particularly useful in the conservation of works of art and archival materials.
