C.T.S. Agarart: a polysaccharide from red algae (agarose/agaropectin) that forms rigid, thermoreversible gels with high water retention. The gel releases water in a controlled way only at the contact surface and «absorbs» the solubilised dirt like a sponge, without penetrating the pores.
- Gelling temperature: 38–42 °C· melting: 85–90 °C· pH (1,5 %) 6,0–7,5
- Preparation: usually 2–5% in deionised water, boiled until fully dissolved and cast or applied hot with a brush
- Uses: cleaning plaster, marble, wall paintings, paper and paintings; a carrier for chelators, enzymes and buffer solutions
