Diammonium phosphate (diammonium hydrogen phosphate, (NH4)2HPO4, CAS 7783-28-0) from C.T.S. In aqueous solution it reacts with the calcium carbonate of the stone to form hydroxyapatite, a mineral of very low solubility with a crystal structure related to calcite, which «binds» the loose grains.
- Purity: 99%; white crystals
- Solubility: 690 g/l in water; pH 8.1 (10% solution)
- Uses: 1–10% solutions in deionised water (brush, poultice or immersion) for consolidating marble, limestone, lime mortars and bone; often with a small addition of CaCl2 or ethanol
