Natural asphalt (bitumen of Judea, bitumen, CAS 12002-43-6) from Kremer Pigmente, as a dark brown-black powder.
- Solubility: soluble in turpentine, white spirit, toluene and other aromatic/aliphatic solvents; insoluble in water
- Uses: transparent brown glazes and patinas (ageing) on gilded and wooden objects, frames and furniture, acid resist (ground) in etching, photosensitive material for heliography
- Note: in oil paintings it causes cracking and failure to dry – not recommended as a pigment in oil paint
