A natural organic product precipitated from milk, soluble in alkaline solutions and low-pH salts, while insoluble in water. To make Lactic Casein usable and therefore water-soluble, it is mixed with ammonia (forming ammonium caseinate) or with slaked lime (forming calcium caseinate).

Lactic casein is an excellent natural binder and is widely used in filler formulations for fresco painting and panels, as well as for preparing "casein paints".
