The blue wool scale is a measure of the lightfastness of organic materials and a visual light «dosimeter» for exhibitions. Half of the surface must be covered with aluminium foil for comparison, and after the exposure period the colour change is compared.

Blue Scales (card): 8 fabric strips dyed with blue dyes of different lightfastness – each strip roughly twice as resistant as the previous one; card 13×4.5 cm
Type 1 test sheet (25×15 cm): the most sensitive lightfastness level; dyed cotton, cut to the required size; to ISO 105 B01-B05
Type 2 test sheet (25×15 cm): the second most sensitive level
There is no exact correspondence between fading and a specific light dose (Mlx·h); many exhibits are more sensitive than the least resistant strip
