Silica gel (silicon dioxide) as spherical beads or powder for controlling humidity in enclosed spaces, packaging and showcases. The beads are not preconditioned to a specific relative humidity; they are intended for drying.
- Silica gel E (1–3 mm / 2–5 mm): white translucent spherical beads without indicator, apparent density ~750 g/l, internal surface area 800 m²/g. Adsorption (25 °C): 11% by weight at 20% RH, 20% at 40% RH, 34% at 80% RH. Regenerable (>10 times) by heating at 130–150 °C.
- Silica gel powder (0.2–1 mm): ideal for drying flowers; 11% by weight at 20% RH, 22% at 40% RH, 33% at 80% RH.
- Neoblue (2–5 mm): with cobalt-free colour indicator; changes from blue to red between 15–45% RH. Can be mixed with non-indicating silica gel (e.g. 1:10). Regeneration up to 140 °C.
- Orange (2–5 mm): phenolphthalein indicator, changes from orange to colourless at 5–9% RH; 6% by weight at 10% RH, 40% at 80% RH. Regeneration up to 140 °C.
- Silica gel M (6–10 mm, macroporous): adsorption takes place mainly between 80–100% RH (80% by weight at 100% RH) – to prevent condensation without over-drying.
- Silica gel M, Siogel type: macroporous, water-resistant, beige spherical beads; 6% at 40% RH, 40% at 80% RH, 90% at 100% RH.
