Natural L-menthol (C10H20O, CAS 2216-51-5), extracted from mint essential oils. It forms waxy needle-like crystals that sublime gradually at room temperature, leaving the surface free of residues – used as a temporary consolidant for lifting archaeological finds, facing and protecting sensitive layers.
- Melting point: 41–44 °C; boiling point 212 °C; density 0.89 kg/dm³
- Solubility: insoluble in water and glycerol; very soluble in ethanol, isopropanol, cyclohexane, ligroin, petroleum ether
- Application: as a melt (faster sublimation than cyclododecane) or as a saturated solution
