Surface cleaning of works of art

Cleaning is irreversible: it is preceded by small-scale tests and documentation. Solvents, aqueous solutions with chelating agents and gels that confine action to the surface are used.

Solvents

Aliphatic and polar laboratory-grade solvents.

Aqueous cleaning & chelating agents

Citrates, EDTA and mild soaps for aqueous cleaning systems.

Gels & nanostructured systems

For controlled application and reduced penetration.
