Consolidation of paint layers

Re-adhering flaking or powdering paint calls for adhesives that are compatible with the object and, as far as possible, reversible. The choice depends on the nature of the paint layer, its sensitivity to water and heat, and the desired optical result (e.g. matte surfaces).

Animal glues & gelatins

Traditional aqueous adhesives for paintings, wood and gilding.

Plant-based & cellulose adhesives

A common choice for sensitive and matte layers.

Synthetic resins & dispersions

Acrylic resins, Aquazol and acrylic dispersions for consolidation and adhesion.

Heat-seal adhesives & heating tools

For consolidation and lining with controlled heat.
