Cyclododecane (C12H24, CAS 294-62-2) from Kremer Pigmente: a waxy, white, crystalline cyclic alkane that sublimes at room temperature. It is used as a temporary consolidant and water-repellent barrier: after treatment it evaporates gradually (days to weeks, depending on thickness and ventilation) without leaving residues.
- Melting point: approx. 58–61 °C; applied as a melt (heated spatula, bath) or as a saturated solution
- Solubility: insoluble in water; soluble in non-polar solvents (white spirit, cyclohexane, n-hexane, petroleum ether)
- Uses: temporary consolidation of friable layers and archaeological finds before lifting; protection of water-soluble paints/inks during wet cleaning; temporary facing and barrier during desalination
- Manufacturer/supplier: Kremer Pigmente GmbH & Co. KG (Germany)
Safety: Flammable solid as a melt/solution; work with adequate ventilation, away from flames. Safety data sheet (SDS) available on request.
